Sparrows Point Action consists of residents from Sparrows Point, Maryland and its surrounding communities who are concerned about the billions of tons of toxic pollution that have been released into the air, soil, sediment, water, and groundwater since Bethlehem Steel began mass production at Sparrows Point in 1893.

The community leaders of the Greater Dundalk Alliance and the communities of Turners Station, Greater Dundalk, Edgemere, Fort Howard, Sparrows Point, and Northern Anne Arundel County have come together with a team of lawyers to form this website in order to reach out to the community—that means you—to bring a lawsuit whose goal is to request relief for community members who have suffered injuries to their health and interference with the enjoyment of their homes because of the area in which they live.

Government enforcement actions and consent decrees have not been able to stop this pollution. Sparrows Point Action will pursue a private nuisance class action lawsuit against the companies at Sparrows Point that have continued to foul the air, water, and soil. We will make the polluters pay for the damage they have done and continue to do to the health, safety, and quality of life of the residents in the area. If successful, the nuisance class action lawsuit will reimburse residents financially for the damage they have suffered and stop the offending pollution. |

Now is the time to band together and support our fight and clean up the environmental disaster around us.
Our cause is not simply about one issue or industry - it is about the health of the entire Sparrows Point peninsula.. |
|
The Sparrows Point area is the number one disease cluster in the State of Maryland (asthma, leukemia, cancer, birth defects, miscarriages, developmental disorders) and the 26th worst disease cluster in the United States (reference: Center for Disease Control and Maryland Department of Health and Mental Hygiene).

And the situation is getting worse, not better. Severstal Steel, which purchased the Sparrows Point steel operation from Mittal Steel in 2008, has indicated that it is seeking a five-fold increase in steel production from 3 million tons a steel a year to 15 million tons of steel a year, which will mean much more pollution. Offensive odors from Kroff Chemical and others continue to interfere with the use and enjoyment of our property. And AES Corporation is seeking a permit from the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) for a liquefied natural gas (LNG) import terminal at Sparrows Point that would require extensive dredging releasing contaminated sediments into an already overstressed Chesapeake Bay.
|
Moreover, the pollution in nearby waters has severely impacted both commercial and recreational fishermen, who have complained about the irritating effects of the toxins and bacteria in the water, causing rashes, skin lesions, leg sores, and ear aches.
